Flappy Bird is a simple yet challenging game. Tap to fly, avoid pipes, and try to survive as long as possible.
Flappy Bird was created by Dong Nguyen, an indie developer from Hanoi, Vietnam. The game was developed in just 2-3 days and released in May 2013 on iOS. Initially it received virtually no attention โ almost nobody downloaded it for months.
Then in January 2014, Flappy Bird suddenly went viral. Nobody knows exactly what triggered it โ some theories point to YouTuber reviews, others to App Store algorithms. Within weeks, Flappy Bird became the #1 free app on both the App Store and Google Play worldwide.
At its peak, Flappy Bird was earning approximately $50,000 per day from AdMob ads. Dong Nguyen suddenly became the focus of international media attention. The pressure turned out to be overwhelming for him.
On February 8, 2014, Dong Nguyen announced on Twitter that he would remove Flappy Bird from stores within 22 hours. His reason: he felt guilty about the addictive nature of the game and couldn't sleep well because of it. The decision shocked the world โ phones with Flappy Bird installed were sold on eBay for thousands of dollars.
The Flappy Bird phenomenon taught several important lessons: simplicity in gameplay can create a global phenomenon, virality cannot always be predicted or engineered, and sudden success brings pressure that not everyone is prepared to handle.
